On October 24, Beijing time, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) will start the selection of a new director general in December after Yuri Ganus was fired in August.
After the Russian Olympic Committee and the Russian Paralympic Committee approved a proposal, Ganus was relieved of his position as the director general of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency.
The recommendation to dismiss Ganus was put forward by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency Supervisory Board after an audit. The audit results allegedly showed that there were some major irregularities in the organization's financial and economic activities.
According to RIA Novosti news agency TASS, the chairman of the board of supervisors, Alexander Ivlev, revealed that a committee is currently being formed to find candidates to replace Ganus, and the selection process will begin in December. The successor is expected to be appointed before February.
The decision to fire Ganus prompted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the National Institute of Anti-Doping Organization (iNADO) to express concerns about the independence of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency.
However, the Acting Director-General of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency Mikhail Bukhanov claimed that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization still works closely with the World Anti-Doping Agency and iNADO.
The World Anti-Doping Agency is monitoring the development of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency, which has imposed a package of four-year sanctions on the country as punishment for data manipulation in the Moscow laboratory.
Ganus was appointed Director General of RUSADA in 2017. After RUSADA was declared non-compliant in 2015, he oversaw the World Anti-Doping Agency's controversial restoration of RUSADA.
In December last year, after the Russian Anti-Doping Agency was found to be manipulating data from the Moscow laboratory, it was again declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The sanctions will not take effect until the sports arbitration court makes a final ruling.
The hearing of the case is scheduled to be held from November 2 to 5.
